The riders were nominated to the team based on the cumulative score received
at qualifying shows in 1999 and at the final selection trials.
Eleven riders competed for the six places on the United States Disabled
Equestrian Paralympic Team that will compete in the Paralympic Games in Sydney, Australia, October 18-30, 2000.
The 2000 Sydney Paralympic Games will be held two weeks after the conclusion
of the Olympic Games and bring together 4,000 athletes with disabilities from
around the world to compete in many of the same sports, in the same venue as
their able-bodied counterparts.
Riders with disabilities compete in dressage in one of four "grade" levels,
with each level having a different set of required tests. A rider's grade
level is determined by their functional physical ability, not by their riding
skills.
Rules of the international and national governing bodies of disabled
equestrian sport require that riders with disabilities must ride borrowed
horses at both the Paralympic Games and the qualifying competitions leading
up to the Games. This levels the playing field so that each rider's ability
is tested, not his or her ability to acquire a well trained horse.
The US Disabled Equestrian Team will also be training and competing at the
Festival of Champions in the Bradshaw Challenge of Champions on
June 21st -25th, 2000.
