Make Your Horse a Paralympic Star
Lend Your Horse for a Qualifying Show
Every rider has an Olympic Dream.....flying
changes, a supple mount, three international judges, representing your country in a
stadium of awestruck spectators.
Now imagine your legs are amputated above the knee and you need to ask for a flying
change in front of those 3,000 onlookers;
imagine you are totally blind, three minutes into a test and asked to perform a 10m
circle at B - a letter that, in your life, you have never seen - as those judges rank you
against competitors who can see.
Now imagine you are on a horse that you met for the first time
only four days earlier. No equestrian Olympian at the 2000 Sydney Games will ever face
that challenge, but our Paralympians will!!
According to the International Paralympic Equestrian Committee Rules, riders with
disabilities MUST compete on borrowed horses. In order for U.S. riders to be competitive
internationally, USCPAA (United States Cerebral Palsy Athletic Association), the national
governing body for international competition for riders with disabilities, requires that
riders meet Paralympic selection criteria by riding also borrowed horses at each of its
qualifying shows.
Qualifying events for riders with disabilities trying out for the 2000 Paralympic games
begins in April 1999 and runs through October. Qualifying
Shows Selection trials are scheduled to be held in the spring of 2000.
This appeal is to horse owners who live in the vicinity of the six USCPAA (United States
Cerebral Palsy Athletic Association) sanctioned qualifying shows. Owners of dressage
horses trained from First through Third Level are being sought to lend their horses for
use by riders with disabilities at these events. Horse owners are welcome to attend the
show with their horses or may be assured that show management will provide staff to take
excellent care of their horse. Funds are available for horse care and traveling
costs.
Please help the 2000 United States Paralympic Team by responding to our plea for
assistance by considering lending your horse or putting us in contact with others who may
lend theirs.
If you have a horse to lend or would like more information on our requirement for borrowed
horses, please contact Hope Hand, USCPAA Athlete Representative and a member of Team USA
which will be competing at the World Dressage Championships for Riders with Disabilities
in Denmark this summer.
