FAQs about Riders with Disabilities
Competitions
1. Classification Grades.
There are four classification grades for Riders with Disabilities.
Grade 1 being most severe disabilities and Grade 4, riders being minimally
disabled.
2. How does a Rider with Disabilities perform a musical freestyle on
a borrowed horse? How do you ever know the beat per minute (bpm) of the horse to
match with the music?
Its not an easy task, that's for sure. Riders usually come up with a very
loose program that suits the general type of horse they ride (large, small, etc). Judging
is a little more lenient when it comes to the music perfectly matching the horse. To give
you an idea of how much more advanced our European competitors are in this sport, in 1996
at the Paralympics the Germans matched to their borrowed horses, had someone video all
their rides and then sent tapes home where they edited all the music to match their horses
perfectly, (in 2 days I think). We are not that far in the US yet!!
