Donna & Jazzman Photo at Gladstone

I hope my "making the team" at age 51 will show other "chronologically challenged" individuals that with persistence and a great horse, you are never too old to achieve your dreams.

Jazzman

It's now 8:45 PST. The shipper just called and reported Jazz is just south of Salt Lake City, eating, drinking, and doing well. He's travelling loose in a three horse box. He should arrive in Winnipeg tomorrow late afternoon. Haven't heard about the others.

JAZZMAN 16.1h Dutch WB gelding
Amethist-Eronica-Hoögheid

Grandson of Nimmerdor and the champion Dutch carriage horse Hoögheid, Jazzman was rejected as a stallion candidate because of his
usual breeding. (Maybe they should look at that again. Micheal Barisone's Grand Prix horse Dotato is by Hoegheid also.) I saw a video
of Jazz, still a 3 year old stallion, 2 days before he was to go to auction at the elite World Cup sale. My leg was in a cast, broken in a freak accident when my Grand Prix horse Curtain Call fell on me at the walk! Although I had been looking for an older horse, I just knew Jazzman was the horse for me. I bought him over the phone -- and the rest is history.

In 1996, Jazz won the California Dressage Society (CDS) Futurity,
the CDS First Level Horse of the Year, and the USDF National First Level Championship. In 1997, he repeated the feat, winning CDS and USDF Second Level Horse of the Year championships as well as the USDF Third Level Freestyle title. In 1998, he "three-peated," winning the CDS and USDF Fourth Level and Fourth Level Freestyle championships.

This year, he qualified for the Pan Am Games final selection trial, finishing 4th in PSG, 2nd in Int.I, and 2nd in Int. Freestyle and is going to Winnipeg as a member of USET.

Jazzman's specialty is freestyle. He was undefeated at third and
fourth levels and has won 3 out of 5 Intermediate freestyles this year
with scores to 76%. He is an intelligent horse and by now knows his
music so well he sometimes starts to anticipate. He loves to perform in
front of a crowd and definitely puts out more energy when he sees a
large, enthusiastic audience.

Jazz is arrogant. He seems to know he is a star and expects
deferential treatment from all around him. He only nuzzles when he
suspects you might have a hidden horse cookie, but will groan with
delight if you scratch his two favorite spots, the top of his croup and
just in front of his withers. Steady as a rock in the dressage ring, he
is a complete basket case on the trail. Agoraphobic, I guess. His
favorite activity is eating -- anything in any quantity -- but he is such as easy keeper he is continuously on a diet.

I work my horses, Jazz and a 5 year old Hannoverian stallion
Laetare, in the mornings. Presently I don't have a groom, so getting
them out and putting them away takes until just after noon. Then, four
days a week, I go to Kaiser Hospital and work the ER from 2 pm till
midnight. On my days off, I teach a few dressage students.

Although I like to write and needlepoint, my main hobby now is sleeping and trying to find a few hours to chat with Steve Borders, my husband. Luckily Steve has also been bitten by the horse bug -- he shows two amateur owner hunters, Market Street and Easy Street -- so he understands. When our farm in San Marcos is completed, all our horses will be at home and hopefully I will have more time to teach, train, judge, and give clinics.

I hope my "making the team" at age 51 will show other "chronologically challenged" individuals that with persistence and a great horse, you are never too old to achieve your dreams.
